CW Library Business Databases

The CW Library subscribes to over 70 databases that cover a wide range of topics. For business, we have some of the best in the industry. Below is a list of widely used business databases that CW Library users can access.

ABI/Inform Dateline - Local and regional business news coverage of corporations, privately held companies, start-ups, executive profiles, marketing, finance, and industry news.

ABI/Inform Global - Business periodicals for business and economic conditions, management techniques, theory, and practice of business, advertising, marketing, economics, human resources, finance, and more.

ABI/Inform Trade and Industry - Business periodicals and newsletters with a trade or industry focus (industry news, product and competitive information, marketing trends).

Business Economics and Theory - With a strong emphasis on titles covered in the EconLit database, this collection provides academic journals and magazines focusing on topics in economics. Perfect for business classes, users will find more than 150 full-text journals to support their research.

Business Source Elite - Full text for scholarly business journals and peer-reviewed business publications.

General Business File ASAP - Analyze company performance and activity, industry events and trends as well as the latest in management, economics and politics. Access to a combination of broker research reports, trade publications, newspapers, journals and company directory listings with full text and images available.

Hoover's Online - Provides information on companies, both private and public, and US and non-US. Includes history, competitors, financials, key executives, and industry trends, etc.

Regional Business News - full text coverage for regional business publications.

Small Business Collection - Perfect for business schools and entrepreneurs, this compilation provides insights, tips, strategies and success stories. Users will find over 280 subject-appropriate full-text periodicals.

Tips On Applying For Outside Scholarships

Applying to outside scholarships? Here are some helpful tips to follow when applying:

1. Before applying, research the company. Make sure the scholarship is sponsored by a reputable company or organization. One way you can do this is by using  the CW Library database, Hoover’s, and search for the company that way.

2. Make sure you read all the requirements carefully so that you are certain that you are eligible for the scholarship.

3. Plan ahead and make sure you have ample time to fulfill all the requirements (i.e. filling out application,writing essays, collect any forms/paperwork needed).

3. Once you've finished all essays or questions, have someone look over it such as a teacher or a tutor. This will ensure that your writing is free of any grammatical errors.

4 .Send your materials in before the deadline. Some scholarships give priority to early applicants. If you’re emailing your application, make sure it’s an email you check frequently so that you don’t miss any correspondence from the scholarship sponsor. 

5. Lastly, don’t get discouraged if you don’t win. Keep trying and applying!

New Outside Scholarships!

Are you looking for scholarships? The CW Library has posted new outside scholarships with deadlines ranging from October 31, 2014 to April 30, 2015.

The outside scholarships cover a wide range of topics. If you are interested in art, try the Create-A-Greeting Card Scholarship. Have a one of a kind goal that makes you stand out? Apply for the Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway. Along with these, there are many more that can be found on the library website under the "Student Resources" section. Scholarships are also posted outside the Library.

How to Text-A-Librarian

Did you know that you can contact the CW Library through text? The College of Westchester Library participates in a text reference service with libraries throughout the United States.

Texting a librarian is a very simple process; all you have to do is save CW Library (66746) to your contacts and just remember to type CWL before your question. For example, if you want to know if the library has a certain database, such as Lexis Nexis, these are the steps you would take:

1.      Compose a message to CW Library (66746) and save it to your contacts for future use.

2.      Type “CWL Does the library have access to Lexis Nexis?”

The hours of operation for Text a Librarian are:

Monday - Thursday	8:00 A.M. -10:00 P.M.
Friday	8:00 A.M. -  6:00 P.M.
Saturday	9:00 A.M. -  6:00 P.M.

You can borrow books and DVDs from the Library.  You will need only your ID to do this.

Free medical resources available on the web

If you're looking for authoritative medical resources on the internet, try some of the websites listed below. All of them are free of charge, run by the US National Institute of Health (NIH) and will provide you with an ample amount of information for any research or test you may have.

• Information about diseases and conditions, body systems and medications among many others. MedlinePlus also has a wide range of tutorials and videos on all different topics relating to health and medicine.
• ClinicalTrials.gov - 
•  Information on clinical trials and studies of humans performed in the United States.
• Drug Information Portal 
• Information about medications such as the category, description and use.

New Outside Scholarship Opportunities

Are you looking for a scholarship? The CW Library staff has compiled a new list of outside scholarships with deadlines ranging from June 30th to October 7th.

Have a knack for writing resumes? Try the Resume Companion Scholarship. Returning to college after a hiatus? Fill out the Return 2 College scholarship. Both these scholarships and many more can be found on the CW Library website under the Student Resources page.

If you're interested in history, browse ProQuest Historical Newspapers: The New York Times. This database contains full text articles of The New York Times from 1851 to 2010. Go back in time and read about politics, society and events that occurred in our backyard years ago.

Library Printing Made Easy

There are two printers in the Library.  If you are computing in the front of the Library, near the soft seating area, select Lib-Printer 1.  If you are sitting in the back of the Library, near the Library office, select Lib-Printer 2. 

If you need to print a PowerPoint presentation, ask a Library staff member how to print multiple slides on one page.

The Library participates in a recycling program.  Print jobs left in printers for extended periods of time will be recycled throughout the day.

New Outside Scholarships

The CW Library regularly posts scholarship funding opportunities from outside companies and associations. Please stop by the library to view our scholarship wall.

There's no such thing as being awarded too many scholarships.  If you have a scholarship from CW, why not add another scholarship from an outside source?  Stop by the Library and ask us how.

Are You Looking for Information Resources?

Information resources are all around you.  These resources include educators like faculty and librarians and also resources you may find in print and online. If you are researching a topic, begin using the reference books, especially subject specific encyclopedias.  They will give you a general overview of your topic. 

Once you narrow down your topic, and decide exactly what you are looking for, begin to search for articles using the library databases.  The databases are unique, and in some cases, a little more difficult to navigate than Google. Do not hesitate to ask us for tips on how to customize your search so that you find articles with the highest level of specificity to support your thesis or research.

(Please note that the tips below are simply suggestions.  Tutoring support might be necessary if practiced advice does not prove useful. Continue to consult your professors for feedback throughout the semester.)
1. Read your assigned chapters and then create your own test questions. Have a classmate “grade” or evaluate your answers.
2. Use mass transit wisely.  While traveling, read your textbook or compose a first draft. 
3. Do not turn in your first written draft. After writing it, print it and read the hard copy. Go back and make corrections. Read your paper out loud.  Edit the paper again.
4. Partner with your professors during their office hours.  Work on exercises together to tighten your skills or knowledge of the subject area.
5. Use your time wisely in the Library. If the Internet is distracting, use a computer free table to do your work.

Validation Sticker Information

This fall, Validation stickers are orange for Day Students  and yellow for Fall I Adult Students.  If you are a registered student, and you do not have a validation sticker on your ID, please stop by the Library or see the Security Desk.

Text a CW Librarian This Fall!

The librarians at the Library Learning Center (LLC) will be available by text this fall.  Your text messages will be anonymous, as we will not see your actual cell phone number.  We will be cooperating with other New York college and university libraries so you will be able to text a question at any time.  If you have any questions, please contact the LLC at 914-831-0280.
